Traditional Herbalism
Modern Herbal Medicine reduces herbs down to the sum total of their parts, such as glycosides, volatile oils, alkaloids, phytosterols, saponins. We then have long list of their actions such as sedative, analgesic, nervine, galactagogue, diaphoretic, thermogenic, expectorant, diuretic and much more. We are left with a chemical composition, similar to a drug, rather than a living plant that is far more than its chemical constituents.
Traditionally, plants were understood from an energetic perspective and this energy would match the energetics and constitution of the person receiving the herb, similar to how a homeopath chooses a specific remedy to match the symptoms and personality of the patient. I prefer to work in a traditional way with herbs, by understanding their energetics from an Eastern medical perspective, including their Dosha balance, their temperament, which tissues they have an affinity for and astrological connections. I am currently writing a module covering Traditional Herbalism to be part of the Naturopathy course which you can find more about here.
Medical Astrology
Historically, Astrology was always taught alongside medicine. Medical Astrology in particular can take many years to master, but alongside Medical Astrology there is a requirement for an in-depth knowledge of natural medicines such as the Eastern medical traditions of Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine, Tibetan Medicine and Unani Tibb. With the exception of Unani medicine, the other three medical traditions all have branches of astrology which are different to western astrology. Traditionally, Herbalism was always linked to a knowledge of the planets, with the famous herbalist Nicholas Culpepper being an adept astrologer. By combining Eastern medicine with Medical Astrology we have an even deeper understanding of the client and also the herbs which can help to balance them.
The basics of using Medical Astrology in practice will be incorporated into the Traditional Herbalism module currently being written for the Naturopathy course.
Germanic New Medicine (GHk)
Having studied many branches of medicine since the early 1990’s in a quest to understand health and disease I have finally found the missing link in Germanic New Medicine or GHk (Germanische Heilkunde).
GHk is based on the five biological laws of nature which state that for every conflict shock experienced by the psyche there is a corresponding reaction in the physical body. These can cause numerous symptoms dependent upon the ‘germ’ layer involved such as the Endoderm, Mesoderm and Ectoderm.
This branch of medicine is extremely in-depth and takes years to learn. If it is relevant to the consultation and the health issues being experienced, I will mention it and provide more explanation which will be specific to the current symptomology. More information can be found here.
